Jerusalem is the capita of Israel and, if including the area and population of East Jerusalem, its largest city in both population and area, with a population of 763800 residents over an area of 125.1 km2 (48.3 sq mi). Located in the Judean Mountains, between the Mediterranean Sea and the northern edge of the Dead Sea, modern Jerusalem has grown far beyond the boundaries of the Old City. Jerusalem is a holy city to the three main Abrahamic religions - Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In Judaism, Jerusalem is the holiest city and has been the spiritual center of the Jewish people since, according to the Torah, King David of Israel first established it as the capital of the united Kingdom of Israel in c. 1000 BCE, and his son Solomon commissioned the building of the First Temple in the city. In Christianity, Jerusalem has been a holy city since, according to the New Testament, Jesus was crucified in c. 30 CE and 300 years later Saint Helena found the True Cross in the city. In Islam, Jerusalem is the third-holiest city, and has been a holy city since, according to the Quran, it become the focal point for Muslim Salah (prayers), known as the First Qibla, in 610 CE, and Mohammed made his Night Journey to the city ten years later. As a result, and despite having an area of only 0.9 square kilometer (0.35 square mile), the Old City is home to sites of key religious importance, among them the Temple Mount, the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Dome of the Rock ...

The Royal Wedding - Jerusalem (HD) (29 April 2011)Feb 21, 2012
Uploading this as the moment was inspiring even to this American! Besides, the BBC's coverage lacked the camera shots of the pride-filled English crowds outside -- and if you ask me, that was the true high point of it. Jerusalem by William Blake and Charles HH Parry as performed at the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton NOTE: It seems all American viewers were fed mono audio of the occasion. (Hello, 1951?!) But you can see this same moment in glorious STEREO here: www.youtube.com ... albeit without the cutaway American viewers saw to the crowds outside.
Jerusalem from aboveFeb 21, 2012
A rooftop tour of Jerusalem provides new perspective on an ancient city Jerusalem is often explored on foot, but another way to see the city is to climb to its rooftops and look down on some of its amazing sites. Today's tour with guide Madeleine Lavine starts at the YMCA, an architectural landmark built in 1878 and well known for its vision of coexistence. Inside, there is a Jewish-Arab preschool, and a hotel and sports center with a mixed staff. From there, we look due East across to the Mount of Olives and see the white dome of the newly reconstructed Hurva Synagogue in the Old City; the Windmill in Yemin Moshe, the Old Jerusalem Train station and Independence Park downtown. We continue atop the Old City walls to the roof of Aish HaTorah Yeshiva, providing a close view of the Western Wall and the Temple Mount with its golden Dome of the Rock, Al Aqsa mosque and Wilson's Arch ... and in the distance, the Orthodox Church on the Mount of Olives. Jerusalem's religious divideFeb 11, 2012
Ultra-Orthodox Jews comprise 10 per cent of the Israeli population, but in Jerusalem there is a growing divide between the secular and the conservative. Conservative Jews have been accused of trying to impose their beliefs on the wider community and some members of the ultra-orthodox sect have been defacing advertising billboards showing pictures of women. Now the holy city where three religions meet finds itself amid a growing religious division among Jews - those who want a society more respective of their modest beliefs and those who say they want to maintain their personal rights. Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley reports from Jerusalem.
